Hair Loss During Cancer Treatment

Wig Options and Support

If you or a loved one has recently been diagnosed with cancer and are about to undergo chemotherapy or radiation, you may be concerned about hair loss and wondering who to turn to. It's important to know that hair loss is usually temporary and occurs shortly after starting treatment.

There are many support centres, like The Cancer Council, that offer free loan wigs in Australian capital cities, providing an immediate solution for patients rather than waiting months for a custom wig.

Hair Donation

If you're considering donating your hair before chemotherapy for a custom wig, keep in mind that 90% of the time your hair alone won't be enough to create a full wig. Donor hair is often needed to complete the piece.

Custom Wigs During Treatment

While some cancer patients choose to wear wigs, many prefer softer alternatives like scarves or bandanas, which are more comfortable and gentle on skin when it is sensitive during treatment. Additionally, some patients may be too ill to leave home or the hospital, and are less likely to want to wear a wig during this time.

In most cases hair loss occurs for a shorter period, possibly 3-12 months, after which hair often begins to grow back. In these cases, accessing a free loan wig from The Cancer Council might be a more cost-effective and convenient option.

Premade Wigs

If you’ve explored free options and still wish to purchase a wig, buying a premade wig from a wig shop is an alternative. Factory-made wigs can be size adjusted or have custom fronts and hairlines replaced, for a more natural look. Customising a premade wig depends on its construction.
