How to donate your hair

I get a lot of questions about the process of hair donation from people who would like to donate their hair to a loved one who is going through chemotherapy or experiencing hair loss. It's a wonderful joy to give something that you have an abundance of to somebody who needs it.

Below are our easy step-by-step instructions for donating your hair.

How to donate hair:

  1. Make sure the hair is a minimum of 22cm long and in relatively good condition - it needs to be strong enough to pull through lace with a needle and tie into a knot!

  2. The hair must be freshly washed and dried. Do not apply styling products.

  3. Fasten the hair into small ponytails around the head with a tight elastic 1-2cm down from where you intend to cut. If you want to maximise your donation, get as close to the scalp as possible so you don’t lose too much length in the hair. You can check out the Sustainable Salons guide if you find diagrams helpful.

  4. Plait each ponytail and tie off securely at the end.

  5. Cut each ponytail 1-2cm above the tie. Do not wash the ponytail after it has been cut off. Please ensure the hair is completely dry before you post it.

  6. Include a note with as much detail about the hair as possible, including the last 5 years of colouring history, texture and genetics e.g. Asian, Caucasian etc.

  7. Awareness is really important. If you’re happy to share an image or short video of your hair being snipped, I’ll share it on our socials to encourage more people to help those in need.

  8. Post your hair to Mr Walkers Wiggery: Place ponytails into a zip lock bag and contact us for our postal address.

  9. OR post your hair to Sustainable Salons, who supply wigmakers that help people suffering from medical hair loss. Check out their donation page and how-to donate guide for more info.
